THREE WORLDS – by Antonio Armadillo
The Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures was very pleased to continue to feature this a mixed media artwork . Artist Antonio “Tony” Armadillo incorporated the Japanese sentiments towards nature within his serene yet powerful interpretation of the most recent tragic occurrences in Japan throughout his artwork. Two master wood-block print artists, Katsushika Hokusai and Ando Hiroshige are reflected in Armadillo’s representation of the tragedy of March 11, 2011.
“Their art reminds me of a statement about the Japanese culture: one must give up trying to rule nature and instead accept nature’s will”- Armadillo. Armadillo used wood panels in honor of the wood blocks used as a medium by Hokusai and Hiroshige.
Armadillo describes the emphasis of his work – “Much of the wood is purposely left bare to reflect the association between the Japanese culture and nature. The beam across the panels is symbolic of the physical design found on many Japanese temples”. Reference to the date of the tragedy, the artist’s work is very impressive as it represents the event within three panels, which denote the month of March, and are lowered to hang about eleven inches, thus completing the date.
